We have been working in school to develop the creative curriculum and also focus on bringing the outside environment inside. The children have been out in the fresh air learning how to use a camera working in teams of two. These sets of photographs are the first of four which endeavour to capture through the children’s eyes the essence of the seasons as found in one of our city’s oldest most picturesque parks.

The Photographs:
These photographs were all taken by the children of Year 2.
In school they had been taught how to handle a compact digital camera and the basics of taking a photograph. They had learnt to hold the camera steady, to allow the camera to focus and to fire the shutter firmly but gently.

The children had learnt some basic composition rules and had discussed the objectives of discovering shape, texture and colour in the park.

The photographs were minimally processed in preparation for printing.

The Brief:
To observe and photograph Winter in Calderstones Park.

The children of Year 2 discussed how they might represent the park in winter and decided to concentrate on shape, texture and colour, wherever it might be found.

This exhibition is their response to what they saw.

We felt excited when we were going...and we felt cold. There was frost on the ground and ice. The cold made us shiver but we didn’t mind – we all had fun.
The park was beautiful. The ice was shining in the sunshine. We found lots of interesting shapes and colours.
We had to be very careful because cameras are delicate. We were afraid to drop them.
We felt grown up to carry a camera.
Our photos are beautiful and we feel excited for everyone to see them.
